ERIC MEYERS BURST INTO A LOCAL GILBERT EMERGENCY ROOM frantically trying to wrap his mind around the happenings of the past twenty minutes. He recalls the pile of wet towels on the sterile tile floor, the swarm of doctors, nurses, firefighters, and paramedics buzzing into and out of the room, and his wife, Kari, shuddering as she huddled in the corner dressed in a spare set of scrubs…and there in the middle of the room lay his one-year-old son, Adam, lifeless, pale, and cold. He arrived just in time to hear that the doctors were placing Adam on life support. Although no one knew exactly how long he had been under water, Eric’s prior experience witnessing similar situations as a law enforcement officer told him that the reality was grim. The mere sound of the words “life support” drove Kari and Eric into a quiet, sobbing despair.
He recognized the devastation and desperation in his wife’s eyes. She kept asking him to tell her that it was going to be okay, but he simply couldn’t do it. He had never seen a situation like this turn around in favor of the child. Their hearts were sick with grief, but they had yet to allow God to whisper to them in the midst of the screams and sobs. Within the hour, their son Adam was air-lifted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at a different hospital. During the transport, Kari and Eric prayed desperately that God would show up in a big way. Eric remembers telling God that he needed to borrow His strength for a little while. They knew that Cornerstone had already begun to rally around them in prayer, but little did they know that Adam was being prayed for by people all over the world. By the time they reached the ICU, Eric felt an odd sense of peace about the situation. He started to believe that
everything was truly going to be okay even though it didn’t make any rational sense at the time.
The doctors told them that Adam would stay in a medically-induced coma and remain on life support for at least the next 36 hours. With their hearts and minds purposely focused on God, forgiveness, friends, and family, Kari and Eric dug in for a long battle. God, however, had other plans. Within 10 hours of arriving at the ICU, Adam began sporadically convulsing in his bed. The nurses rushed in and administered additional medications to sedate him. They tied his limbs to the bed, but the convulsions kept coming. Finally, the doctor came in and told them that Adam was somehow trying to fight the machines. The only option was to “pull the plug” and see if Adam would continue to fight.
At that moment, Kari and Eric knew that a God moment was upon them. They did not, however, expect Him to display the extent of His power in their son. Not only did Adam start breathing on his own after being taken off life support, but he literally walked right out of the ICU the first time he was taken out of his bed and placed on the floor. God delivered more healing than the family even dared to pray for.
Adam’s story provides modern day evidence that God is still working. Eric and Kari Meyers had the privilege of experiencing a miraculous God moment as they nearly lost their son, but the pain and horror of the near loss made God’s incredible might undeniable and truly indescribable. Adam turned two this past March. He has no physical or mental deficiencies, and every doctor who attended to him acknowledged “a higher power” at work in this story...
