The History of Cornerstone

The Cornerstone story begins with a few who gathered in an apartment clubhouse thirteen years ago desiring to do church in a way that would appeal to people who liked God but had lost interest in traditional church. Their first Sunday services where in an elementary school and right from the start there was a connection with the people of Chandler. Attendance swelled, but more importantly, the stories of life-change increased. People who were far from God were making new and fresh connections, families were being restored, and young people were selling out for God. Even though they were small, the buzz had begun.

Things moved quickly. They out grew the elementary school, a Junior High cafeteria and then Hamilton High School became their next location, but this was only temporary. The people of Cornerstone promised together to purchase land and continue the momentum by building on the current property at Alma School and Willis. The first set of buildings were completed in February of 2004 and within 18 months they were running 1400 in three services. Immediate planning began on the current worship center.

The new building would be for people who needed to be a part of what God was doing but didn’t have a seat in the room. Again Cornerstone focused not on those that were already there but on those who were needing to begin a dialogue about Christ. They merely wanted to provide a seat for those who had yet to experience God.

During the 36-month construction of the worship center, Cornerstone grew in attendance to 3200 while doing six services. They moved into the new facility in spring of 2007 and now are running 6000+ while offering five services.

There’s a deep sense that God has more for Cornerstone and know they have been given the opportunity to capture the southeast valley for God. Next they will purchase additional land for the expansion of their current facilities and with excitement have their gaze set toward a Scottsdale satellite campus.

The story doesn’t end there. Every week Cornerstone provides a place where the people can experience life-change, a place for those who thought church is too boring, too intimidating or just not relevant to their stressed-out, fast-paced lives. Cornerstone is a place with Biblical teaching and messages that deal with everyday challenges, hopes and heartbreaks.

That’s what Cornerstone is about -- 13 years in the Chandler community providing a casual atmosphere with today’s music, quality media, messages that you can take with you, an amazing children’s area, where students are priority, a bookstore and wi-fi cafe.

Cornerstone is the place. Whatever your circumstances -- single, married, single again, with or without children -- and no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done. You matter to God and you will experience community at Cornerstone.
